Hemp vs Cotton Gi — Which One Lasts Longer? (We Trained in Both)

The honest comparison nobody in the BJJ industry wants to run.

We're biased — we sell hemp gis. You should know that upfront. But we're also BJJ practitioners who trained in premium cotton gis for years before we built Daruma. The comparison below is based on that direct experience, not on a spec sheet.

If good cotton gis were good enough, we'd still be wearing them. We're not. Here's why.

What a Quality Cotton Gi Gets Right

Let's be fair. Premium cotton gis — we're talking Atama, Hyperfly, the serious end of the market — are genuinely good equipment. Well-constructed, properly weighted, good collar structure. A quality 100% cotton gi from one of these brands costs EUR 100 to EUR 160 and earns that price at the start.

Cotton is also familiar. You know how it washes, how it breaks in, how it moves after six months. There's no uncertainty.

Where Cotton Falls Short for Daily Trainers

The problem with even a premium cotton gi isn't quality at purchase — it's durability under sustained training load. If you're on the mat three to five times a week, you're subjecting your gi to constant collar grips, friction, pressure, and repeated wetting and drying cycles.

Two years in, our premium cotton gis were soft in all the wrong places — the collar had lost its structure, the knees were thinning, the patches peeling. A EUR 130 gi was beginning to feel like a EUR 60 one.

Cotton also has no inherent antibacterial properties. It absorbs sweat effectively — which sounds like a positive until that moisture becomes the environment bacteria thrive in. Despite washing after every session, the odor compounds over a training lifetime because the bacteria establishes in the fiber at a level that standard washing cycles don't fully clear.

What Hemp Changes

Hemp has up to 3x the tensile strength of cotton at the fiber level. This is a property of the plant — hemp was used in rope, sails, and workwear for centuries specifically because it holds up under sustained mechanical stress.

In a gi, this translates to collar fabric that maintains its structure after hundreds of grip sessions. Seams that don't fray at points of high tension. A jacket that still performs like a real gi two, three, four years in.

Hemp also softens with use without degrading structurally. Cotton softens because fibers are breaking down. Hemp softens because the fibers relax — the structural integrity stays. That's why our athletes describe the gi at six months as better than the day they opened it.

The 5-Year Cost Argument

This is where the EUR 198 price tag reframes itself completely.

A premium cotton gi — Atama, Hyperfly — costs EUR 100 to EUR 160. With daily training, it lasts two to three years before structural wear becomes a real issue. Over five years, that's two to three replacements: EUR 200 to EUR 480 spent, plus the time spent sourcing, sizing, and breaking in new gear every couple of years.

Our Honest Recommendation

If you train once or twice a week recreationally, a well-made cotton gi from a brand like Atama will serve you well. The durability case is less urgent when the training load is light.

If you train three or more times a week — regular classes, competition prep, open mats — a hemp gi is the smarter investment. You'll spend less over time, and you'll train in something that gets better instead of gradually falling apart.
